Job Description

Heavy Machine Operator – Civil Construction (Hornby, Canterbury)

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Heavy Machine Operator to join our client’s Civil Construction team in Canterbury, based out of Hornby. You will work on a variety of civil infrastructure and roading projects across the region. We are looking for someone who is motivated to work hard, show off their skills, and maintain a humble attitude.

About the role:

  • Operate excavators and other plant machinery as required.
  • Provide general labour support to the team when necessary.
  • Use machinery according to manufacturer instructions, ensuring safety and proper handling.
  • Perform weekly prestart inspections of plant and machinery (greasing, cleaning, and maintenance).
  • Undertake a variety of civil engineering tasks.
  • Identify potential hazards and propose effective solutions.


About you:

  • Full, clean Class 1 license (or equivalent).
  • WTR endorsements (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience as a machine operator in deep trench excavation, earthworks, waste/freshwater, and other civil construction projects.
  • A strong willingness to get involved and contribute to the team.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  • SiteSafe or Construct Safe certificate (or ability to obtain).
  • Passionate about your work and take pride in completing jobs to the highest standard.
  • Physically fit and ready to take on the physical demands of the role.
  • Flexibility to travel within the region for various projects.
