Our Digital Innovation team works within Smart Council to make Council services and technology better for the people that use them. They deliver people focussed projects and improvements, through collaborating with other teams and ensuring diversity of thought aided by design thinking.

We are looking for a passionate and talented Design Lead to join our dynamic team and take the reins on designing and delivering exceptional visualisations and digital experiences. In this role, you will work across various strategic programmes to create powerful digital assets and environments that communicate to a diverse audience.

As the Design Lead, you'll bring the Digital City Model to life, ensuring it plays a crucial role in enhancing engagement, supporting mana whenua representation, and increasing understanding of urban growth and city transformation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and delivery of hyper-realistic 3D visualisation projects largely in unreal engine, including environments, backgrounds, layouts, and user interfaces.
  • Create high-quality digital assets, models, and environments using advanced techniques in modelling, lighting, texturing, special effects, and animation.
  • Design and develop interactive user interfaces that enhance the user experience and engagement.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to conceptualise and present ideas that communicate complex concepts to a wide range of audiences.
  • Inspire and lead teams to leverage the Digital City Model for strategic programmes that drive engagement and understanding.
  • Champion the visual presence of mana whenua through thoughtful design and integration of cultural narratives.
  • Ensure all projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet the high visual and technical standards expected by stakeholders.


Key Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in visual art, animation or spatial design with 8 years professional experience in a similar role
  • Proven experience in 3D design, digital visualisation, and user interface design (portfolio required).
  • Strong proficiency with industry-standard software such as Unreal Engine, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max.
  • Deep understanding of lighting, texturing, modelling, animation, and special effects.
  • Experience with interactive design principles and user-centred design.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including developers, planners, and project managers.
  • Experience in city design or related fields is a plus but not required
