Overview
Are you seeking a Senior Financial Accountant Contract opportunity in Wellington?

An experienced Senior Financial Accountant is needed to step into a key role covering parental leave through to early 2026. This is a great opportunity if you are Wellington-based to join a high-impact public sector organisation making a genuine difference for Aotearoa.

About the role

  • Lead regular financial reporting processes (month-end, quarter-end, year-end)
  • Support the preparation of financial statements and accountability documents such as the Annual Report and Statement of Intent
  • Oversee payment runs and review invoices for budget holders
  • Contribute to financial responses for Select Committee questions, OIAs and PQs
  • Maintain the fixed asset register in line with accounting standards and internal policies
  • Manage external audit processes and engage with appointed auditors
  • Provide leadership and day-to-day support to a direct report (Finance Officer)
  • Work closely with Finance Business Partners to deliver high quality management reporting

  • Fixed Term: Up to $140k per annum, 40 hours per week
  • Contracting: Up to $125/hour, up to 30 hours per week

Skills and Experience

  • CA or CPA qualified (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a senior accounting role
  • Ideally brings public sector or Crown Entity experience
  • Strategic, solutions-focused mindset with strong technical accounting skills
  • Confident leading key processes and engaging cross-functionally
  • Available to start ASAP or before the end of the month
