Overview
Are you seeking a Senior Financial Accountant Contract opportunity in Wellington?
An experienced Senior Financial Accountant is needed to step into a key role covering parental leave through to early 2026. This is a great opportunity if you are Wellington-based to join a high-impact public sector organisation making a genuine difference for Aotearoa.

About the role
- Lead regular financial reporting processes (month-end, quarter-end, year-end)
- Support the preparation of financial statements and accountability documents such as the Annual Report and Statement of Intent
- Oversee payment runs and review invoices for budget holders
- Contribute to financial responses for Select Committee questions, OIAs and PQs
- Maintain the fixed asset register in line with accounting standards and internal policies
- Manage external audit processes and engage with appointed auditors
- Provide leadership and day-to-day support to a direct report (Finance Officer)
- Work closely with Finance Business Partners to deliver high quality management reporting

- Fixed Term: Up to $140k per annum, 40 hours per week
- Contracting: Up to $125/hour, up to 30 hours per week

Skills and Experience
- CA or CPA qualified (or equivalent)
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in a senior accounting role
- Ideally brings public sector or Crown Entity experience
- Strategic, solutions-focused mindset with strong technical accounting skills
- Confident leading key processes and engaging cross-functionally
- Available to start ASAP or before the end of the month
