We have an opportunity for a FinOps Engineer to join our Platforms Technology team. This is an opportunity to combine your financial acumen with technical expertise to empower cloud cost management and optimization.

We sat down with our Platform Manager, and they let us know the following about the role.

What are some of the tasks the successful candidate in this role will complete?

  • Cost Monitoring and Optimisation: Continuously track cloud usage and expenses, set up automated alerts, and develop strategies to minimize waste and optimise spend.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with the FinOps Planner to support the development and maintenance of cloud budgets and forecasts, ensuring accountability across teams.
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with finance, DevOps, engineering, and business units to align cloud usage with financial and operational goals.
  • Cost Allocation and Chargeback/Showback Models: Co-develop chargeback/showback models with the FinOps Planner to ensure clear visibility into cost allocation across departments.
  • Governance and Policy Implementation: Establish policies for cost-effective cloud usage and ensure compliance with established guidelines, including rightsizing, reserved instances, and auto-scaling.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

One of the most challenging aspects of this role is ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures while driving cost optimisation and efficiency. This requires balancing the need for rigorous financial controls with the flexibility to adapt to changing business needs and technology landscapes.

What specific tech skills are required to be successful?

  • Cloud Cost Optimisation: Experience in crafting technical strategies to enhance budgeting, forecasting, and cloud cost-efficiency, with a track record of identifying savings and optimising resource use.
  • Cloud Platform Knowledge: Proficiency with AWS, Azure, or GCP, and experience with cloud cost management tools such as Cloudability.
  • Data Analysis and Automation: Skill in analysing usage data and using automation tools or scripts to manage costs.
  • FinOps Expertise: Familiarity with FinOps principles and best practices.
  • Clear Communication: Ability to convey financial and technical insights to diverse audiences.
