About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the growing Food Compliance Services group in New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS). Food Compliance Services manages urgent food safety issues, investigates non-compliances with food safety legislation and applies enforcement actions. We follow up food safety complaints including reports of foodborne illness outbreaks, allergic reactions, foreign matter found in food, non-compliant labelling, and manage food recalls. As a Food Compliance Analyst you will support this operational work by collecting and analysing data and reporting on food safety trends and breaches of food legislation.

You will work in the Liaison and Coordination team, alongside a team of Food Compliance Coordinators, a Compliance Analyst and a Capability Adviser. You will be a part of the wider Food Compliance Services team comprising of regionally-based Food Compliance Officers throughout New Zealand.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • The development of regular reports on Food Compliance's work programmes and taking ownership of the reporting schedule and planning
  • Using advanced skills to extract data from the Information Leader database (for example pivot tables) and can then present that data in a manner that aids the end user (management reports, Ministerial's, and OIA requests)
  • Analysis of quantitative and qualitative information to identify key themes, insights and patterns.
  • Identifying trends associated with complaints and recalls managed through file management and Information Leader


About You - Mōu

We are looking for someone with excellent written communication skills coupled with industry knowledge and nous. Our next Food Compliance Analyst will be organised, autonomous, proactive and have a great eye for detail. They will use these skills to create a narrative from data which can influence all levels of the organisation. You may come from an adjacent government agency, industry or local council.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have a relevant tertiary qualification in Science, Public Health, Environmental Health or Food Discipline
  • Have proficiency in data analysis and recognising trends
  • Be a team player who can collaborate across teams and working styles
  • Possess operational database experience
  • Be experienced in developing and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders

About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū

This is a close-knit team that works towards MPI's vision of providing safe and sustainable food products within NZ working with our own branch teams and other directorates all around the country. We ensure business are adhering to the food legislation such as the Food Act, Wine Act, The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code & Animal Products Act.

The Food Compliance Services group is responsible for protecting public health by:

  • Investigating breaches of the Food Act, Wine Act, and Animal Products Act
  • Working with Public Health Units and local Councils to investigate foodborne illnesses and outbreaks
  • Supporting and coordinating food businesses to conduct food recalls
  • Responding to food incidents and critical food safety events such as outbreaks of foodborne illness, and large-scale recall events
  • We work with Territorial Authorities, Ministry of Health, District Health Board Public Health Units, ESR, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), industry, and consumers.
