He angitūtanga: The Opportunity
Auckland Council is seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Monitoring Officer to monitor and enforce compliance with the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), District, Regional, and Unitary Plans, and Resource Consents in the Auckland region. This is a critical role focused on ensuring the sustainable management of Auckland's environment by overseeing complex land use consents and discharges from large/complex developments.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage complex monitoring tasks for district and regional resource consents, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Provide specialist advice and technical expertise to ensure sound decision-making, particularly in high-risk and complex consent areas.
  • Enforce compliance by identifying non-compliance, assessing impacts, and developing appropriate enforcement plans.
  • Conduct inspections and provide guidance to consent holders, promoting best practices in environmental management.
  • Lead and support a team of environmental monitoring professionals, sharing knowledge and mentoring junior team members.
  • Contribute to business improvement projects within the Regulatory Environmental Monitoring Unit.
  • Support customer service efforts, providing expert advice and responding to queries effectively while managing conflicts.

This is a full-time, permanent position working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday with a competitive salary and benefits package, offering a rewarding opportunity to contribute to Auckland's environmental management and sustainability initiatives.

He kōrero mōu: About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Geography, Planning, or a related field.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in environmental compliance, resource consent monitoring, or a similar regulatory role. Local government experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge and skills:
  • Strong understanding of the Resource Management Act (RMA) and related legislation.
  • Ability to analyze complex compliance issues, problem-solve, and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience with conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to lead and mentor a team, providing technical guidance and support.
