Job Description

About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

Fisheries New Zealand is working hard to make the most of improvements to data collection, to drive an effective and efficient fisheries system, while continuing to ensure healthy sustainable fisheries. As part of this, a new framework is being developed to manage impacts of fishing on protected species like seabirds. You will lead the delivery of this project, including working to realise the benefits for fisheries management from the $68 million Onboard Camera programme. This role sits within the Highly Migratory and Pacific Fisheries Team in the Fisheries Management Directorate. You will work across the wider Fisheries New Zealand business unit and take a significant stakeholder engagement focus to this role, working with Seafood NZ and the Department of Conservation.

This role will involve:

  • Maximising the benefits for fisheries management from the on-board cameras programme
  • Providing strategic and intellectual leadership on fisheries management
  • Finalising and implementing a framework for mitigating fishing impacts on protected species like seabirds, turtles and sharks
  • Working closely with colleagues across MPI, other agencies and industry
  • Ensuring alignment of projects/programmes and timely delivery of milestones.


About You - Mōu

You do not need to be a fishery related subject matter expert, or come from a fisheries background, though having some fisheries experience would be beneficial. You may be an experienced Senior Adviser, or a Principal Adviser. We need someone with project and programme delivery experience, including task setting and delivery of milestones.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • Project/Programme management experience
  • Leadership skills and experience
  • Experience establishing and effectively maintaining collaborative relationships with stakeholders and within and across Government agencies
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of the fisheries system and effective management responses for protected species
  • Strong analytical skills.

You will be joining a passionate team that is dedicated to Highly Migratory and Pacific Fisheries, while supporting New Zealand's wider objectives in the Pacific.
