Job Description

Are you passionate about fostering democratic processes and community engagement? The Far North District Council is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Democracy Advisor to join our team on a fixed-term basis for 12 months, covering parental leave. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the democratic governance of our vibrant district, ensuring that our community's voice is heard and valued.

Te Wero – The Challenge

As a Democracy Advisor, you will play a crucial role in supporting the council's democratic functions, including managing public meetings and providing expert advice on governance matters to both internal and external customers.

I ā koe - About You

To be effective in this role, the role-holder must:

  • Serve as a communicative liaison between elected members, senior managers, staff, and the Far North community on governance and civic education.
  • Understand and interpret legislation accurately, often on the spot, and relay this information professionally to elected members, senior leadership, and the public.
  • Formulate concise statements that balance operations, governance, legislation, and public expectations.
  • Maintain exceptional professionalism in a highly political and scrutinized environment.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of delegations and the Council and Community Board’s Governance Structure to guide report-writers and senior leadership.


Key Attributes:

  • Diploma in business/administration or legal executive preferred.
  • 5+ years of administrative experience, ideally in local government or legal practice.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Local government experience.
  • Passion for governance and community outcomes.
  • Progressive mindset for continual improvement.
  • Strong stakeholder relationship skills.
