Job Description

Position Overview
The Nutrition Laboratory at Massey specialises in analysing food, plant and animal products through our accredited research and testing service.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee our Nutrition Lab in a full time (37.5 hr/wk) role. This is your opportunity to make a significant impact in a world-leading university renowned for its research excellence and commitment to community and industry.

About the Role
As the Laboratory Manager, you will lead the Nutrition Lab team, ensuring the smooth operation of our IANZ accredited laboratory. Your role will be pivotal in managing client projects, maintaining compliance with ISO 17025 standards, and delivering timely, high-quality reports. You will also contribute to specialised analyses primarily in the in the chromatography area e.g. fatty acid and amino acid profiles to support our service provision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management: Guide and develop the Nutrition Lab staff, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Client & Stakeholder Relationships: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring excellent service delivery.
  • Innovation & Change: Drive continuous improvement and innovation within the lab, contributing to equipment maintenance and operational protocols.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Evidence of senior level stakeholder and client-facing activities
  • Minimum 10 years’ lab experience in a commercially based role, preferably in the food industry (either for human or animal consumption) or commercial analytical laboratory
  • Previous experience in people management and leading high-throughput food analysis teams.
  • Strong background in analytical techniques and methodologies relevant to the food industry.


Appointment is reflective of skills and experience aligned to Grade 6 ($67,184 - $95,514) and located in Palmerston North.
