About the Role:

The Cancer Support Nurse will be an integral part of the Cancer Services team, providing vital information and assistance to those affected by cancer in the Wellington, Porirua, Kapiti, and Hutt Valley regions. This multifaceted role includes direct client care, facilitating group support sessions, and working alongside volunteers and community initiatives to offer comprehensive services.

The Cancer Support Nurse will be a key point of contact for individuals and their whānau, offering a compassionate and professional service while ensuring that the community has access to up-to-date cancer information and resources.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Care & Support:

The Cancer Support Nurse will offer personalised support and cancer information to clients, whether through phone, email, or face-to-face interactions. By understanding everyone's needs, the Nurse will assist clients in making informed decisions about their care and help them navigate the emotional and psychological challenges associated with cancer. Empathy, trust, and clear communication will be at the heart of this role.

Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals:

Building strong professional relationships with healthcare providers will be crucial in ensuring that clients receive the best possible support. The Cancer Support Nurse will help coordinate referrals and promote available services, particularly among Māori, Pasifika, and other vulnerable populations who are disproportionately affected by cancer.

Group Facilitation & Education:

The Nurse will organise and lead a variety of cancer-related support groups and educational sessions, ensuring they meet the needs of the community. They will work closely with other experts to deliver informative workshops and will evaluate the effectiveness of these programs to continually improve services.

Resource Management & Distribution:

The Cancer Support Nurse will help maintain and distribute resources, including cancer information materials and practical support items such as wigs and prostheses. They will ensure that clients have access to the necessary tools to cope with the physical and emotional effects of cancer.

Community Outreach & Awareness:

The Cancer Support Nurse will actively engage in community events and campaigns aimed at raising awareness and supporting the organisation's cancer services.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • A Registered Nurse with a current New Zealand Nursing Council Practising Certificate
  • At least two years of clinical nursing experience, with a preference for oncology, haematology, or community-based nursing
  • Further education in oncology nursing is highly desirable.
  • Full, current driver's license
  • Strong cultural awareness, especially in relation to Māori and Pasifika communities, with experience working alongside diverse groups.
