Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
As the Principal Adviser, reporting to the Director based in Wellington, you will be leading and shaping aquatic initiatives with a key focus on reducing the spread and impact of exotic Caulerpa seaweed that is presenting a material threat to our marine environment.
Your key priorities will contribute to the long-term management of exotic caulerpa and, more broadly, development of the aquatic pest management system including:
- Supporting the Director in setting the strategic direction and priorities of Biosecurity New Zealand's Exotic Caulerpa Long Term Management Programme by providing thought leadership, analysis, and advice.
- Being a leading contributor to the wider collaborative effort by mana whenua, regional councils, community groups scientists and others all working on this problem
- Working closely with a dedicated internal Exotic Caulerpa Programme team by leading and contributing to the delivery of a range of projects.
- Working closely with a wide range of external partners and stakeholders.
- Facilitating the development of joint strategies and management plans and ensure that all projects and programmes are developed through appropriate consultation and co-design processes and are fit for purpose.
- Identify risks and opportunities to strengthen and improve the programme and the wider system.
Mōu - About You
You will have a relevant high-level qualification and your strong experience and passion working in exotic Caulerpa management and aquatic biosecurity more broadly will help you excel in the role.
You have a track record of delivering on marine pest initiatives and applying a science-based approach to strategic and operational delivery of programmes.
You have supported initiatives requiring collaboration with multiple partners and stakeholders including iwi Māori, other regulatory agencies, and community groups to help achieve alignment and effective delivery of a complex programme.
Relationship building and working effectively with partners and stakeholder groups is in your daily repertoire. You love your deep knowledge in this space and know how to deliver on time. Leading and shaping aquatic pest management work with a key focus on Caulerpa is what brings you fulfilment.

This newly established role reports to the Director to support them with aquatic pest management. You will be a key influencer within the management of exotic Caulerpa working with the Programme Manager – Exotic Caulerpa and wider team.
