Job Description

At Downer New Zealand, we’re leading the way in delivering integrated transport services across the country. We are now seeking a talented and driven Design Engineer to join our National Pavements Team. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone passionate about civil engineering, eager to work on impactful infrastructure projects, and ready to grow within a supportive, safety-first organisation

Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity 

As a Design Engineer – in our Pavements team, you will play a key role in planning, preparing, and executing pavement designs for renewal treatments across both NZTA and Local Authority maintenance contracts. You'll deliver design solutions that range from concept through to construction, incorporating industry best practices and a “safety in design” philosophy.

This is your chance to work on complex and rewarding projects in pavement and asphalt surfacing rehabilitation while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team across multiple locations.

  • Conduct pavement investigations and oversee laboratory testing
  • Deliver designs for rehabilitation treatments, surfacing, and drainage
  • Produce detailed design documentation, reports, and specifications
  • Provide technical support during construction to ensure quality and compliance
  • Perform post-construction monitoring of pavement performance
  • Mentor interns and graduates, and engage in ongoing professional development
  • Collaborate with clients, project teams, and internal stakeholders
  • Contribute to the development of forward works programmes


Nga pūkenga matua | Important Skills

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in the civil engineering industry
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering or Design
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • A collaborative, motivated, and safety-conscious mindset
  • Willingness to travel across New Zealand when required


Desirable:

Experience with RAMM, AutoCAD, CIRCLY, or Austroads Pavement Design tools
