Join the Far North District Council as a Legal Executive and play a crucial role in supporting our legal team. We are looking for a detail-oriented and proactive individual to assist in providing legal advice, preparing legal documents, and representing the Council in various legal matters.
Te Wero – The Challenge
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Legal Executive for a 6-month fixed-term position to cover parental leave.
Key duties include:
Assist Senior Solicitors with legal advice, correspondence, and file preparation.
Prepare e-dealing paperwork for review and signature.
Review leases, easements, and covenants.
Support the Legal Services Officer with research and drafting responses for LGOIMA requests and Ombudsman inquiries.
Conduct legal research for the Manager - Legal Services.
Represent the Council in the Disputes Tribunal, including drafting submissions and advocacy at hearings.
Liaise with external Legal Executives as needed.
Stay updated with changing legislation.

The ideal candidate will have:
A Diploma in Legal Executive Studies or local government legal experience
Previous local government experience preferred
Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Proficiency in negotiation, research, and drafting
Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
Ability to prioritise tasks according to Council/Court timelines and statutory deadlines
Teamwork, professionalism, discretion, and political awareness
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Proven ability to collaborate and cooperate effectively
Enthusiasm for customer service excellence
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to relate to diverse individuals internally and externally
Advanced documentation, report, and workflow process writing skills
High-level relationship development, management, and customer facilitation skills

The salary for this position is Grade 16 within Council's salary structure (Band: $85,004 to $100,005 pro rata per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
