Job Description

Position Overview
Massey University is a world-leading university in many academic disciplines and fields of research. Our point of difference is that our research is connected to community and industry. Working together across disciplines and locations, we solve national and global problems through fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research, while culturally and artistically enriching our world.

We are constantly challenging the way we work and learn through the calculated adoption of emerging technologies to allow us to best support our staff and students across a range of complex environments and multiple locations. Significant programmes exist for capital works, provision of space that will embed new workforce and pedagogical models, and most importantly, the strategic planning and alignment of the land and buildings footprint with the strategic direction and needs of the University.

About the Role
We are seeking an inspiring, innovative, and commercially focused people and business leader to join us in the role of Executive Director Estates, to make a significant strategic contribution to the future of the university’s estate and operational management, ensuring our financial and environmental goals are achieved.

Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor University Services, the Executive Director Estates will provide leadership and strategic direction to a portfolio comprised of a wide range of service areas with seven direct reports and around 110 staff.

The team works to support all facets of the University environment and is comprised of:

  • Campus and Commercial Services
  • Estates Project Management
  • Operational Support, including Emergency Management
  • Information, Systems and Space
  • Sustainability, Policy, and Communications

The role will drive positive estate-related results while also being pivotal in connecting vision to culture and leading innovation and engagement.

As Executive Director Estates, you will be instrumental in developing what Massey’s three campuses will look like in the future and leading our Active Asset Management workstream in terms of the estate, land holdings, campus facilities, and infrastructure.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Have significant experience at a senior leadership level in a large organisation in the area of estates, infrastructure, and capital development. Experience with high-value, complex projects and construction management or building services would be preferable.
  • Possess significant operational experience, with appropriate tertiary and technical qualifications, e.g., a tertiary qualification in property, engineering, design, construction, facilities management, business, or similar disciplines.
  • Be an innovative and inspirational leader—one who can demonstrate their ability to lead and develop high-performing teams of professionals and create an environment that supports professional growth and personal development.
  • Have a proven ability to build mana-enhancing, customer-centric, collaborative teams.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the benefits of operating as a Te Tiriti-led organisation.

In addition to a competitive salary, Massey also offers:

  • Up to 6.75% employer contribution to the UniSaver Superannuation Scheme
  • Five university holidays per year in addition to your annual leave
  • Subsidised Southern Cross Healthcare plan for you and your family
  • Discounted membership to our fully equipped recreation centre and gym facilities
  • Staff purchasing privileges and discounts at many commercial and retail businesses across NZ
  • Access to on-campus crèche/day care facilities for dependents of staff on our Manawatū and Auckland campuses
  • Staff concession for study with Massey and 30% discount on fees for immediate family of staff undertaking undergraduate study (conditions apply)

This position will be based at the Manawatū campus in Palmerston North.

Please note: We do reserve the right to appoint prior to the closing date if the ideal candidate is identified.
