About the role:

Jump on board our deep-water fleet, a league of 12 fishing vessels operating year-round from Cape Reinga to the Ross Sea. Our deep-sea vessels can be at sea for up to 12 weeks at a time, catching, processing, and packaging seafood onboard, delivering the finest New Zealand seafood to tables worldwide.

As the 1st Mate, you'll play a key role in supporting the Skipper with vessel operations, overseeing the deck crew, contributing to bridge watchkeeping, fishing, and navigation duties aboard one of our longliner vessels the San Aotea.

This is an Independent Contractor role on a trip on (6-7 weeks) - trip off (6-7 weeks) rotation.

About you:

You're an excellent communicator, able to engage across all levels of our operations. Thriving in dynamic environments, you embrace change and support others through it. A strong focus on health, safety, and wellbeing is key, along with a passion for delivering top-quality New Zealand seafood. Physical fitness, mental resilience, and a good team fit are essential.

What we're looking for:

  • Mate Fishing Vessel - Unlimited (MFV-U) or NZOW (ring fenced) equivalent.
  • Hold a current maritime medical or ability to gain.
  • General understanding of compliance to all relevant NZ Legislation including MOSS, HSWA, Fisheries Act/regulation and MPI food safety.
  • Have experience with longlining operations of a vessel this size and operational complexity.
  • Strong focus on Health, Safety and Wellbeing of yourself and the entire crew.
