Operational Safety and Leadership are key
The Container Terminal Operations Manager, Southdown, leads and oversees the overall performance of the physical container transfer operation within the terminal. This includes health & safety, budgeting, service quality and efficiency i.e. scheduling, equipment and asset readiness, and train and road transport timeliness. You will lead and engage with a large team of 40+ staff and be responsible for their on-job performance, training, compliance, and personal development.
As a safety leader, you will champion KiwiRail's health, safety and wellbeing initiatives, promoting vigilance and compliance through building onto an established workplace culture that recognises that every injury and accident is ‘preventable’. You will manage hazards, safety inductions and incidents to ensure compliance is upheld according to health and safety regulations
Oversee team performance and training through effective communication and efficient resource planning
Develop long-term operational and safety plans and implement systems to gather performance data for continuous improvement
Control variable costs, ensuring it aligns with budget targets and drives cost-saving initiatives to optimize financial performance
Ensure standard operating procedures are followed, maintain on-time performance, provide necessary equipment, and communicate effectively with customers to meet service standards
Oversee terminal operations, implement processes to enhance turnaround performance, and address specific freight requirements, including dangerous goods and refrigerated cargo

5-8 years job-related operational experience
Degree or relevant tertiary qualification
Recognised professional in a specialist area with experience managing small projects
Can perform complex calculations and is able to analyse and interpret information
Previous experience in container operations and or management/leadership is desirable
