Mo te tūranga | About the role:
As a Security Specialist, you'll play a hands-on role in monitoring, analysing, and responding to cyber threats that target ASB's critical systems. Working within the CSIRT, you'll operate at Level 1 and 2 response tiers—triaging security events, performing threat assessments, and contributing to incident investigations and response efforts.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Identifying, analysing and responding to real-time security incidents
- Conducting forensic and root cause analysis to determine incident impact and attribution
- Providing recommendations for remediation and risk mitigation
- Handling security artefacts (e.g. malware, logs, evidentiary files) with care and in alignment with best practices
- Producing high-quality outputs such as incident reports, intelligence summaries, and operational updates
- Supporting continuous improvement of our detection and response tools and processes
- Collaborating with other technology teams to share knowledge and drive a security-first mindset
You'll also have the opportunity to engage with industry communities and contribute to awareness programmes that help keep our staff, customers, and the public safe.

To thrive in this role, you'll bring a strong technical foundation, a curious mindset, and a calm, analytical approach under pressure. You'll be proactive, quick to assess situations, and skilled at communicating complex issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
You'll also:
- Stay ahead of evolving threats by staying connected with the broader cyber security community
- Demonstrate strong critical thinking and investigative skills during incident response
- Show initiative in improving tools, processes, and response strategies
- Work effectively with others—even in high-pressure situations
What You'll Bring:
- 3+ years of experience in technology, with a strong understanding of infrastructure or application environments
- 2+ years in a dedicated security role, ideally within a CSIRT or SOC
- Hands-on experience with SIEM tools, endpoint detection platforms, malware analysis or similar technologies
- Familiarity with threat frameworks and attack methodologies (e.g. MITRE ATT&CK)
- A collaborative attitude and a desire to grow your knowledge in a supportive team environment
- Active engagement in the security community (e.g. SANS, NZISF, NZITF, ISIG, FSIE)
