Mō te Tūranga | About the role

The Data Guardians squad is managing ASB's modern data platforms. The squad is maintaining existing and modern data platforms.

This Senior Data Engineer role may also require meeting with internal stakeholders to discuss the technical requirements for your services and communicating this back to the team.

We advocate for T-Shaped teams and are looking for someone who is willing to learn new tools and processes while sharing their knowledge, and uplifting others in the team.

This will include the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain and support Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Perform database upgrades and patching.
  • Optimise database queries.
  • Manage and monitor performance, capacity and security of database systems.
  • Continuous improvement of processes, technology, and tooling to automate workflows and ensure compliance controls are followed.
  • Automation of monitoring and alerting, review of database configuration, optimisation of database queries.
  • Continuous improvement of the health and stability of our environment through identification of areas for improvements.
  • Mentoring and uplifting the best practice and driving things with an automation mindset.



Ngā mea kia whai angitū ahau? | What do I need to be successful?

We advocate agile, fully cross functional teams. We are looking for a mix of technical skills, including:

  • Experience in database design, data curation, and data wrangling ability from a variety of structured or unstructured sources.
  • Experience in large scale, complex data warehouse or Big Data environments, and data systems management.
  • Experience working within Agile and DevOps frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (can balance the level of technical detail for the right audience, and can clearly articulate problem statements)
  • Works collaboratively and comfortably taking ownership of work/issues that deliver to user/business outcomes.
  • Have a base understanding of cloud adoption framework.
  • Azure certification is advantageous.
