Fonterra Procurement is focused on building quality and strategic relationships with suppliers that leverage Fonterra’s purchasing power to lower the Co-Operatives cost base and achieve security of supply through integration of business-critical suppliers as true strategic partners.
The Co-Operative has set a clear strategy around sustainability goals. Developing a future focused procurement strategy for our Energy Category is vital to achieving our Long-Term Aspirations. The external environment for this category is evolving at pace and the role of the Senior Category Manager to set a strong strategic vision for procurement of energy and an executable plan is critical.

About the role
As the Senior Procurement Energy Category Manager, you will create procurement strategies that enable Fonterra’s sustainability journey and support its decarbonisation goals while optimising costs. Your leadership will guide the transition to sustainable fuel sources, leveraging broad expertise in sustainable energy options to deliver long-term strategic procurement plans and enhance value for the Co-Operative. You will oversee a team of category and vendor managers, ensuring alignment with organisational needs through effective stakeholder engagement.
You’ll be at the forefront of driving Fonterra’s shift towards sustainable energy solutions, and your expertise will be critical in reducing supply risks and costs, impacting the Co-Operative’s operations and returns for our farmers. Your role is key in setting a strategic vision and aligning procurement processes with Fonterra’s sustainability and decarbonisation goals.
The ideal candidate will bring broad experience in energy markets and sustainable energy options. While understanding the dynamics of New Zealand’s energy landscape is beneficial, we are open to candidates with strong energy expertise from international markets who can bring fresh perspectives and leadership to the role. Familiarity with pricing structures in energy procurement and experience in managing risk and ensuring supply security will be essential.
An understanding of market dynamics, government policies, and environmental regulations that influence energy procurement decisions is key. The ability to assess risks such as supply disruptions, price volatility, and regulatory changes will enable you to develop effective strategies for mitigating these risks.
About you
This is a senior leadership role that demands exceptional Procurement thought leadership and the ability to significantly influence senior stakeholders. You will regularly engage with and present to the Chief Operating Officer, the Commercial Leadership Team, and other senior stakeholders as needed.
Additional skills, experience and attributes include:
- Tertiary qualification, preferably Supply Chain or related business degree. Achieved MCIPS (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum of 10 years strategic procurement experience, including category strategy development, sourcing, negotiating, contract establishment and vendor management.
- Energy market experience across gas, electricity and coal
- Proven track record in creating and executing strategic management plans.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to and engage with people at all levels (including executive and Board) in the organisation
- Understanding of leading procurement principles and practices and demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge in large and complex organisations
- Highly effective negotiator, ability to realise increased value from contracts, improved mitigation of risk and lower costs
