Job Description
Expressions of interest sought for: Ministerially appointed layperson member of the Veterinary Council of New Zealand
The Ministry for Primary Industries, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, is seeking expressions of interest for one layperson Council member for the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.
Interest is sought from someone who can bring a diverse range of skills and perspectives to the table, along with interest in the veterinary sector.
The Veterinary Council of New Zealand is the regulator for veterinarians. It upholds veterinary standards to protect people and animals, and to maintain trust in veterinary professionals.
The Council is the governing body of the Veterinary Council if New Zealand. It is responsible for ensuring the organisation carries out its functions under the Veterinarians Act and fulfils its strategic purpose: Leading veterinary excellence, ensuring quality, and advancing trust.
The Council is made up of a mix of appointed, elected, and ex officio members. At this time, the Minister will be appointing one layperson.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be able to serve a term of three years
- Not currently be employed as a public servant or during the term of service on the Council
- Be willing to disclose any financial, professional, and personal interests which may conflict with the responsibilities of a Council member
- Not be involved in anything that might bring the veterinary profession or the Veterinary Council of New Zealand into disrepute (e.g. criminal proceedings).
The Council meets about four times each year in person, and occasionally online, if required. A Council member can expect to spend roughly 20 days per year on Council business, including meeting preparation. For this, all members receive a modest fee (set by the Government) to compensate their time.
Expression of interest will be open until 11 May. If you wish to be considered, please send a cover letter and your CV to vet@vetcouncil.org.nz with “Council member EOI” in the subject line.
Questions about the role can be addressed to the Veterinary Council of New Zealand CEO & Registrar Iain McLachlan at registrar@vetcouncil.org.nz.
