Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Sport and Recreation team is seeking a Fitness Supervisor to lead and enhance fitness services at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland, based at the new state-of-the-art Recreation Centre. This role plays a key part in shaping an engaging and supportive environment, ensuring members receive a high-quality fitness experience.

In this role, you will oversee the delivery of fitness services, lead by example on the gym floor, and support members in their fitness journey. You will also play a key role in managing a team, ensuring smooth operations, and maintaining high standards of health and safety.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the fitness team, including rostering and overseeing casual staff.
  • Ensuring a high-quality member experience through engagement and support.
  • Tracking and reporting on fitness services and operational performance.
  • Leading health and safety initiatives, ensuring compliance and best practice.
  • Coordinating and delivering fitness events and initiatives.


This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position.
Remuneration is $55,300- $69,600, depending on skills and experience.

The Recreation Centre offers extensive fitness facilities, exercise services, and specialist programmes to encourage participation in an active and healthy lifestyle. The Sport and Recreation team works to create opportunities for students and staff to stay active, build connections, and balance their well-being with academic and professional pursuits.

He kōrero mōu | About you

To be successful in this role, you will be proactive and forward-thinking, anticipating needs and taking initiative. You will bring:

  • A recognised fitness qualification and current First Aid certification
  • At least two years’ experience in a recreation or fitness facility.
  • Experience with rostering and supporting a fitness team.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with members and external stakeholders.
  • Confidence in maintaining health and safety standards.
