  • 1x fulltime position available, fixed term for 12 months!
  • Role will be based at National Office, Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington
  • We're offering a competitive salary starting from $125,926 to $139,459 depending on experience


We're looking for a highly capable Lead Data Product Developer with expertise in Databricks, AzureDevOps (CI/CD), and Power BI to join our flagship data products team! This role offers exciting opportunities to work with a modern technology stack and our brand-new data warehouse. As a Lead Developer, you will leverage your experience and skills to support our transition to a new data platform and drive the continued development of our high-performing team.

The Data Solutions team is building the future of data tools at Oranga Tamariki and is currently focused on contributing to a larger programme of work creating our new, modern data platform and data reporting solutions.

As a Lead Developer, you will be part of our team of developers across the full lifecycle of data product development - we:

We're looking for a strong collegial and collaborative team player who can bring expertise to mentor and advise others in both our team and our expanding data community.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring

We're particularly interested in people with strengths in one or more of the following:

  • A solid understanding of data ecosystems and how data flows through them
  • Proficiency in DevOps principles and the implementation of CI/CD practices, preferably with Azure DevOps
  • Proven experience with Databricks and data-focused languages - ideally SQL, M, DAX, and Python/PySpark
  • Proven experience with star schemas or other data model designs
  • Expertise in designing and building complex, performant, user-centric reports in Power BI or similar tools
  • Fundamental understanding of ETL processes and building data pipelines
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring team members, fostering a continuous improvement culture
  • Can lead a squad of developers, overseeing the flow and quality of work
  • An understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices is important - In particular, knowledge of tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples' culture.
