Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HW&FR) department has an opportunity for a Senior Healthy Waters Specialist within the System and Insights team.
Auckland Council’s System and Insights team is seeking a Senior Stormwater Specialist to play a key role in advancing our stormwater management. You will be at the forefront of addressing flooding, enhancing flood resilience, and improving water quality.
You will have a thorough understanding of environmental monitoring, and the ability to process and analyse data. You will be an innovative and systematic thinker who wants to be a part of a rapidly evolving programme of work to improve the utility of Healthy Waters operational data through collaborative efforts with internal and external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in data systems, modelling, hydrology and water quality, with a passion for achieving positive outcomes for the community.
Some key responsibilities will include:
As part of team of industry experts, you will bring a passion for innovation to your work to enhance existing tools/systems and Auckland’s stormwater management.
This will include:
- Develop and enhance existing systems and processes to improve stormwater data utility and information publication across Auckland Council stakeholders
- Advance and improve reporting of extreme events to enhance preparedness for unforeseen weather-related challenges.
- Utilise hydrological and water quality databases and analytical tools for effective stormwater resource management, ensuring accurate and efficient data analysis.
- Develop and investigate machine learning and artificial intelligence systems to analyse and predict stormwater-related effects
- Assist in the development of a remote sensing camera network to enhance stormwater monitoring capabilities.

He kōrero mōu: About you
You are highly proficient in Environmental Engineering/Science, with a proven track record of innovation and effective leadership in project and programme management.
Your excellent customer rapport and communication skills, combined with your interpersonal abilities, make you a valuable team player. You excel at engaging with teams with the HW&FR department and across the organisation, demonstrating adaptability to manage change and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Your expertise extends to research and scientific report writing, as well as systems integration and interoperability. Overall, you bring a strong blend of technical knowledge, leadership, and collaborative skills to the table.
We will be looking for specific experience with:
Minimum- MSc or ME, with Environmental Engineering/Science and/or Data Science Modelling.
7+ years relevant work experience in Environmental Engineering/Science, 4 of which must be in the stormwater industry or related field.
