He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council and Waste Management NZ Limited are seeking an Independent Chairperson for the Waste Disposal Services (WDS) Joint Venture Executive Committee. This is a unique opportunity to guide the governance of a significant public-private partnership that delivers efficient and sustainable waste disposal services across Auckland.

As Chairperson, you will provide independent leadership, ensuring the joint venture operates profitably and in alignment with Auckland Council’s environmental and strategic objectives. You will help navigate a period of potential transition as Auckland Council reviews its ownership stake in WDS.

Your expertise in governance, environmental responsibility, and infrastructure operations will be critical in ensuring WDS continues to deliver best-in-class waste disposal services while upholding the highest environmental and regulatory standards.

He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for a leader with extensive governance and infrastructure experience and a strong commercial and environmental focus.

You will bring expertise in the following areas:
• Executive leadership at a Board or senior management level in a medium-to-large business.
• Commercial acumen to optimize profitability and return on investment while ensuring strategic alignment with WDS and its shareholders objectives.
• Industry and technical knowledge of the waste management, quarry, or infrastructure sectors.
• Environmental awareness and an understanding of sustainability and regulatory frameworks, including the Health and Safety at Work.
• Ideally experience working within or alongside local government and understanding Auckland Council’s role in public-private partnerships.
• Collaborative leadership style, with a strong ability to engage stakeholders and lead through complex strategic decisions.

O Mātou Kōrero: About Us
Waste Disposal Services (WDS) is a 50/50 joint venture between Auckland Council and Waste Management NZ Limited. It was established to manage, redevelop, and operate Whitford Landfill and associated waste disposal services. The joint venture is critical in ensuring economically and environmentally responsible waste disposal for Auckland.

Key activities include:
• Operation and management of Whitford Landfill
• Management of the East Tamaki Transfer Station
• Marketing and coordination of solid waste disposal across Auckland

As the joint venture enters a period of strategic review, this is a pivotal governance role with the potential for structural changes in the near future. The Chairperson will provide oversight and leadership during this review period.
