Job Description

Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

We are seeking an experienced people leader to join our Trade and International Relations directorate which sits within our Policy & Trade business unit.

The Manager International Environment & Sustainability leads MPI's work programme on international environment and sustainability instruments and measures to ensure they maximise sustainable outcomes for New Zealand's primary sector and for our trade in sustainably produced food and fibre products.

You will ensure MPI effectively represents NZ Inc and primary industry sector interests in relevant cross-agency work programmes relating to international environmental issues that affect the primary sector, including international negotiations on climate change, biodiversity, forest management and sustainability.

Given the international context of this role, some offshore travel may be required.

Mōu - About You

You will have a passion for the primary sector, as well as the people and stakeholders that deliver change on the ground. You will have 3-5 years' experience in effectively managing and leading a team, ideally within a policy or international context.

You will be comfortable leading people, have a track-record of building high performing teams, and a focus on the wellbeing of your team & developing capability among your staff. You'll be experienced in analysing complex technical issues, making decisions with financial impact, and in developing and implementing government policy.

In addition, you will be confident in building relationships and negotiating with a broad range of stakeholders to drive action, while holding a clear vision for current and future priorities.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

Policy and Trade provides sector-level strategic thinking and evidence-based advice for effective government decision-making for systems related to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, biosecurity, food, animal welfare, and rural communities.

Our Policy and Trade business unit also manages input into international rule setting bodies, including the negotiation of trade agreements and environmental commitments relating to our sectors, and work on a variety of primary production, food safety, and biosecurity issues with our trading partners to assure that our products are safe and suitable.

Reporting to the Divisional Manager Sustainable Trade & Environment, you will work with a Wellington based team which consists of Policy Analysts, Senior Policy Analysts, and a Principal Adviser. The team also works closely with the Policy & Trade business unit, wider organisation, and industry bodies, so there is a chance to build meaningful relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
