About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

We are seeking a skilled professional with a passion for design and creativity. You will support the work of our Engagement and Information directorate which sits within our Public Affairs business unit.

Public Affairs brings together the functions that assist MPI's Director-General to meet the expectations of the general public, ministers and key industry stakeholders. The Engagement and Information directorate encompasses events, campaigns, organisational communication, graphic design, and looks after our internal and external digital channels.

As a Graphic Designer, you will be asked to develop creative solutions and designs and produce high-quality print and digital products that meet the needs of the Ministry and protect its brands.

Key focus areas of the role are to:

  • Design products that meet business needs by understanding design briefs and working with content owners and business units.
  • Come up with creative solutions to communicate complex ideas in a clearly understandable way.
  • Promote and protect MPI's brands by working with business units to ensure they are used in accordance with policy and guidelines.
  • Ensure products are printed to an appropriate standard by liaising with external printing companies.
  • Support the team leader by providing information, analysis and advice to enable the team to carry out its mandate and drive improvement.
  • Proofread your work, check, and complete it efficiently and effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with your team, and act as each other's quality control.

About You - Mōu

You will ideally have at least three years' experience in a design agency or in-house design team and strong skills in Adobe CS – particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. (Skills in Premier Pro and After Effects would also be welcome.)

You will be proactive, have sound judgement, and experience building strong relationships with a variety of different people from different backgrounds. As this is a fast-paced role, you must have the ability to manage multiple changing priorities and thrive under pressure, while maintaining a strategic focus and an eye for detail.

You will easily connect with stakeholders to collaborate and build effective working relationships and networks with internal and external teams and agencies to help deliver successful graphic designs.

To be successful in this position, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Tertiary education in graphic design.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft office products and experience in using InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Experience in designing for print reports, leaflets, posters and publications, as well as infographics.
  • Experience in designing for social media.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; including ability to talk through a design brief with a client and conceptualise based on requirements.
  • A high level of accuracy and a commitment to working within given timelines within a busy environment.
  • Understanding of Te Ao Māori and Tikanga Māori in a design context – (Knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Tikanga Māori design is desirable.)
  • Shortlisted applicants will be asked to submit a portfolio demonstrating their skills over a range of disciplines.

Reporting to the Team Leader Design, you will work within a small but supportive design team that brings strong depth of knowledge and promotes a collaborative working style so that everyone feels supported in contributing to our collective goals.

You will be able to learn from your colleagues' extensive experience and longevity within MPI, and they will appreciate your fresh perspective and ideas. The team works across the whole organisation and there is a lot of variety in what they do, providing design services for biosecurity, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and food.
