About Guardian Steel:

Guardian Steel is an innovative new entrant into the roll forming industry tooling up to make high quality roofing product. We are rolling out a tech enabled platform to revolutionise the supply of roofing materials to our customers and are looking for a passionate and experienced Head of Manufacturing to lead our production team.

About the Role:

This is a hands-on management role crucial to the success of Guardian Steel. The Head of Manufacturing will oversee all aspects of our production process, ensuring efficiency, quality, and safety. This role requires a strong leader with a deep understanding of sheet metal fabrication, roll forming, and flashing folding techniques.

Responsibilities:

Factory Setup and Commissioning

  • Collaborate with the General Manager to plan and execute the setup of the factory, including the layout, workflow, and installation of equipment.
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of roll forming machinery, flashing folding machines, and other essential production equipment.
  • Ensure that all equipment is installed correctly, calibrated, and tested to meet operational requirements and safety standards.
  • Establish initial inventory levels of raw materials and necessary tooling.


Staffing and Training

  • Recruit and select qualified personnel for various roles within the factory.
  • Develop and implement training programs for staff on the safe and efficient operation of equipment, quality control procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Manage subordinate staff, providing direction, support, and performance feedback.


Production Management

  • Lead the factory team to efficiently meet production targets and deadlines while ensuring high quality standards, optimizing workflows, maintaining a safe work environment, managing raw materials and finished goods inventory, and collaborating effectively with other departments.


Quality Control

  • Implement and enforce robust quality control procedures at each production stage, conduct regular inspections to identify defects and ensure adherence to standards, and meticulously document quality performance for analysis and continuous improvement.


Health and Safety

  • Champion a safety-first culture, ensuring meticulous adherence to all New Zealand health and safety regulations (including the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015), and proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.


Manage Production Equipment

  • Skillfully operate and maintain roll forming machinery and flashing folding machines, perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting, and ensure the safe and efficient operation of all production equipment.


Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Roll Forming Machinery Operation - Possess comprehensive knowledge and skills in setting up, operating, and maintaining various roll forming machines, including understanding metal gauges, troubleshooting, and quality control standards.
  • Flashing Folder Operation - Demonstrate expertise in operating flashing folding machines (manual and automated), understanding flashing designs and specifications, interpreting technical drawings, and working with various metals used in flashing production.
  • Forklift and Gantry Crane Operation - Hold a current forklift operator's certificate (or be willing to obtain one), possess the ability to operate a gantry crane (or demonstrate a capacity to learn), and understand load limits, safe lifting practices, and workplace transport safety regulations.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role within a roll forming environment, with a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience operating various machines. Must possess strong operational management skills to effectively lead teams and achieve production goals.


Desirable Skills and Experience:
Welding experience

  • Proficiency in common welding techniques such as MIG, TIG, or stick welding.
  • Understanding of welding safety procedures and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret welding symbols and blueprints.
  • Experience welding different types of metals, particularly those used in roofing and flashing.
