He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We are currently recruiting for a casual Duty Manager to join our team at The Terrace Café. You will be based at the Terrace Café and will also have the opportunity to work at The Container Bar in Aotea Square and Starks at The Civic.

The Terrace is located at the main entrance of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading performing arts venue the Aotea Centre, and overlooks Aotea Square - one of the city’s largest green spaces and known for its civic and cultural events. The Terrace is a relaxing and spacious café where our patrons enjoy our fresh and delicious meals, tasty share plates, L’affare coffee, and a great selection of local craft beers. The Duty Manager Cafés will manage staff and service delivery to ensure smooth operations and achievement of the annual business plans, manage the day-to-day processes, systems and procedures of the café and actively demonstrate and drive a culture of service excellence at the café.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage the cafe on a day-to-day basis ensuring service quality and handling customer complaints.
  • Manage the roster and staff, ensuring staff are replaced when sick leave or annual leave is taken.
  • Contribute to developing the capability of staff through mentoring, coaching, and identifying training and development needs to improve performance.
  • Represent management after hours, acting-as the senior person on duty.
  • Setting high standards of quality and ensuring they are met by the team.
  • Meeting with vendors and salespeople to order various food and supplies from various companies, ensuring the café standards are met and food and beverage offerings are kept up to date with current market trends.
  • Manage the food and beverage service ensuring orders are placed for appropriate stock levels and food quality is maintained.


He kōrero mōu: About you

  • Our ideal applicant will bring a background in staff management, with demonstrated ability to lead, manage, motivate, and develop staff. You will have an approachable and professional manner, and a focus on service excellence.
  • Ideally, you will have 3+ years’ experience in Food and Beverage, preferably in the event/hospitality industry as a supervisor or shift leader, including café, catering and bar experience.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft computer programmes (Outlook, Word, Excel) with good keyboard skills and knowledge of point-of-sale operating systems is highly beneficial.
  • Our preferred applicant would have the ability and flexibility to work casual hours over rostered weekdays, evenings and weekends. We can normally offer a minimum of three hours per shift with some shifts requiring flexibility to work up to 12 hours for our busier events.
