Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
We are seeking a Policy Analyst to join the Bilateral Relations & Trade team which sits within the Trade & International Relations directorate of the Policy & Trade business unit.
The work of a Bilateral Relations & Trade is highly varied ranging from technical and trade negotiations, hosting audits and delegations, briefing Ministers & senior leadership, as well as coordinating the MPI relationship with assigned countries across the whole range of MPI's initiatives.

As a Policy Analyst, you will:
- Provide Ministers with clear, concise, and relevant information on issues and options
- Develop high quality briefings and draft timely and relevant responses to Ministerial and/or Parliamentary questions & Official Information Act requests
- Facilitate high level visits by Ministers and senior officials
- Represent New Zealand at bilateral meetings
- Collaborate with peers in Policy & Trade and other government organisations on cross-government policy development
- Create and maintain effective internal and external relationships on the progress of specific issues
Mōu - About You
You will be working as a Policy Analyst role or in a similar role with an interest in broadening your experience and policy knowledge in an international environment. You may also be working in another area of MPI and interested in exploring a career in Policy & Trade, as this team encourages diversity in thinking and welcome those who may bring different ways of working.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, a solution focussed approach, and a proven ability to forge effective partnerships. You will draw on your experience to bring a versatile approach and enjoy working in a collaborative environment.
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience as a policy analyst or a similar working environment
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility and comfort with working with ambiguity
- A delivery-focussed approach and ability to progress multiple pieces of work simultaneously
- Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to effectively engage with a wide range of persons from different cultures who have an interest and involvement in the primary sector
- Ability to travel within New Zealand and internationally if required
- You must have a current full New Zealand driver licence (not temporary, learner, or provisional) or equivalent full foreign drivers' licence, and any endorsements required for the type of driving you will be doing.
Low level Security Clearance
most preferably a New Zealand citizen, who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last five (5) years, OR
is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team
You will work with our Wellington based team, reporting to the Manager Bilateral Relations & Trade (South Asia, Middle East and Africa), and work alongside a team of experts including Senior/Market Access Counsellors, and a Principal Adviser.
The team helps facilitate the sustainable growth of New Zealand's economy through strengthening relations with counterpart agencies in other countries. The team works with sectors across the primary industries to understand their needs and aspirations for trading their products and then assist them in reaching those goals in international markets.
The team also works closely with the wider Policy & Trade branch, government agencies and industry so there is ample opportunity to build meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
