He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council has a portfolio of about 180 closed landfills with a majority now repurposed into parks and reserves. The sites have a range of risk profiles from large municipal landfills through to informal construction waste and soil-fill sites.

We are looking for a senior project manager to help manage projects on these closed landfills to enable us to continue safeguarding our communities and building resilient associated infrastructure and assets.

On any given day you could:

  • deliver specified projects, NZS391X/CCCS contracts, programmes of work, and risk analyses for high risk, high complex assets
  • negotiate with contractors/suppliers to resolve site related issues
  • liaise with internal and external stakeholders to communicate updates and progress on the delivery of projects
  • work with mana whenua partners to integrate Te ao Māori principles into closed landfill projects


The capital works programme has a current budget of approximately $13 million per year and growing for works on our closed landfills. These projects are often complex and high-profile, with significant public and mana whenua interest, and technical challenges, including relating to climate change.

You’ll be embedded in a team of fellow engineers, project managers and other technical staff, and will work alongside subject matter experts in geotechnical, coastal engineering and contaminated land, who will provide you with the support you need to deliver the best outcomes for Aucklanders.

He kōrero mōu: About you
With a Bachelor's qualification in civil/environmental engineering, science or a related field, you have:

  • extensive experience in design and construction projects managed with CCCS/NZ391X contracts
  • a strong background in the management of health and safety within projects, and specifically safety in design
  • experience in managing external suppliers, e.g. consultants and contractors
  • strong relationship building skills and are politically savvy
  • the willingness to develop and build your own confidence and capability in Te ao Māori and how it applies to our projects


Knowledge of contaminated land and/or environmental engineering is desirable.
