The Finance & Business team play an important role in ensuring that the Council makes informed, prudent, and sustainable financial decisions.​

  • We drive how the Council will meet its objectives financially, and how these will be funded and financed​
  • We work closely with other business units to provide financial advice​
  • We set the internal financial control environment and deliver management and external financial reporting​
  • We provide effective and efficient transactional services​
  • We provide commercial expertise to help deliver public value
  • The Finance Operations team sits within Finance & Business and includes Rates, Payment Services, Credit Control. The Rates team manages all rates functions (including water rates), assists customers with account queries, and maintains the accuracy of the Rating Information Database.


Our Rates team is entering an exciting period of growth as we increase our capacity to better support our Wellington ratepayers.

About the role:
As our new Rates Analyst, you will be responsible for rates and water rates generation, notice production, and other billing functions for Wellington City Council.
You will provide rates analysis capability through your exceptional rates system expertise. A key component of the role will be to ensure that the council's rates databases is accurate and fit for purpose and that rates are assessed in accordance with legislative requirements and rating policies.

A snapshot of your day may include:

  • Generating rates and water rates, notices, and other bills required
  • Maintain the accuracy of the Rating Information Database in accordance with legislation, Council policy and delegated financial authority
  • Provide specialist advice to rates help desk and customer services teams to ensure customer queries are responded to accurately


To succeed in this role, you will have some of the skills below:

  • 4 years' experience in either "big data" or a similar role at local government level.
  • Ability to analyse data and pick out key insights
  • Capability to explain rates and rates data to a diverse audience of stakeholders
  • Understanding of Government Legislation, specifically Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 (desirable).
  • Remuneration for this position is $68,855 - $81,005 depending on experience.
