Job Description

Our Legal business unit have been on a journey over the last year - we've implemented a revised structure, to ensure we're well-resourced and have a team of well supported, high performing lawyers. In joining our team, you'll be able to take advantage of the amazing work opportunities that arise from the varied, challenging, and complex work we do for Pōneke.

We have an exciting opportunity for either a Senior or Principal legal counsel who specialises in construction law to lead and provide pragmatic, solutions focused legal advice to guide Council in its construction activities. The breadth and depth of the council's construction needs make this a unique opportunity full of fresh challenges to assist you in the development of your legal practice.

The primary focus for this role is to manage the risk associated with Council's construction activities and advising and reporting to the senior leaders in the organisation.

This role sits within our Commercial and Property team. They provide legal advice across the full range of Council's commercial, property and construction work. There are challenging and ongoing projects that need strong and varied legal support such as the Moa Point sludge minimisation facility and strengthening and modernising the central library, Te Mataphi.

About you:

  • You'll ideally have 7+ years PQE working in a similar in-house role or private practice.
  • Have advanced contract drafting skills and understanding of the construction / infrastructure sector and the framework within which Council operates.
  • Be confident in your abilities to work autonomously and in a highly political environment to provide strategic, solutions focused legal advice, on all construction matters.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and an awareness of Māori perspectives and issues relevant to Māori.

We are looking to appoint between $114,150 - $134,294 for a Senior or $134,807 - $158,596 for a principal per annum, for this role, depending on the relevant skills and experience.

We're Working for Wellington. Wellington City Council's team provides more than 400 services every day for Wellingtonians - everything from parks and pools to consents and cemeteries - playing our part in making Pōneke an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play.

Working for the Council offers you a range of benefits including 5 weeks annual leave, flexible working options, health and wellbeing support, Council staff discounts and a range of learning and development programmes and opportunities.

Applications close 24 January 2025. All applications must be submitted online.

All applicants must have the right to work in New Zealand and hold a current practicing certificate.
