Job Description

Maritime New Zealand is looking for a Senior Solicitor with expertise in Public and International Law to join their team part-time, working 20 hours per week. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to the organisation's vision of preventing harm, saving lives, and securing our future. As part of the Legal Services team, you will provide high-quality research and legal advice on a wide range of issues relevant to the operation of Maritime New Zealand. Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

As a Senior Solicitor for Maritime New Zealand, your role will include providing high-quality research and legal advice across a variety of issues. You will apply your knowledge of Public and International Law by advising the Director and staff on statutory responsibilities, reviewing legal work prepared by team solicitors, drafting important legal documents, and building essential relationships with government departments and service providers. Additionally, you will have the opportunity represent Maritime New Zealand at international forums.

The ideal Solicitor will bring a wealth of experience in Public and International Law, have the ability to interpret legislation and apply common law principles, proven skills in researching and preparing legal opinions, experience in maritime, environmental, security, health & safety issues. Ideally, previous experience providing legal advice in a public sector legal team and have sound leadership and coaching skills. Your excellent written and verbal communication skills will be key to your success in this role.

  • Admission as Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and a current practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one);
  • A minimum of 5 years plus post-admission experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret legislation and apply common law principles to relevant functions and obligations under a law framework;
  • Sound public law knowledge and experience with proven skills in researching and preparing legal opinions;
  • Sound knowledge of or interest in international law and legislative drafting;
  • Experience in maritime law, regulation, or international law would be an advantage.
