About the role

The Forensic Geolocation Unit (FGU) is a small team based in Wellington.

The FGU gather and analyse geolocation evidence to support district investigations in the apprehension and prosecution of persons involved in criminal activity.

In this role you will be encouraged to use your initiative to build NZ Police’s capability in the area of cell site surveying and subsequent presentation of the evidence. You will be supported to become a subject matter expert in order to present your analysis in Court.


This role requires someone who is methodical, inquisitive and tenacious, has good listening, written and verbal communication skills and is able to work well within a busy, established team environment.



Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides support to District investigation teams by advising on and analysing Geolocation data.
  • Conducts forensic cell site surveying, including Radio Frequency Propagation Surveys as well as analysis of other communication technologies and location data.
  • You will be regularly required to travel within New Zealand to support District investigations through drive testing and presenting expert evidence in Court.
  • Manage competing demands and high workloads at times, with the ability to reprioritise as necessary.

You should have existing knowledge of the RF technologies and networks used by telecommunications companies.
Ideally you will have experience using mapping tools such as ArcGIS and other ESRI products.
You should be familiar with industry RF survey tools such as Nemo, TEMS, Rohde & Schwarz.
It is preferable that you will have relevant industry RF qualifications and/or experience, or geospatial analysis qualifications and/or experience

Special Requirements:

Successful applicant must reside in Wellington
Must have or be able to obtain a government 'Top Secret' level security clearance

Utu ā-tau | Salary

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $80,295 and $83,973 (Technician) or $102,808 and $108,894 (Analyst), dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
