Job Description

About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

As a Policy Analyst you will sit within the Cost Recovery directorate in the Corporate Services business unit. You will play a key role in supporting the team's policy expertise within cost recovery and charging practices. You will contribute to the development and maintenance of our cost recovery policy frameworks, as well as establish clear and repeatable processes for regular updates to fee regulations.

In this role, you would have the opportunity to:

  • Develop advice, frameworks and guidance that result in effective, efficient, and fit for purpose implementation of cost recovery and delivery our regulatory functions for the primary sector on high profile projects.
  • Develop practical and robust cost recovery policy advice, using evidence from a range of sources, to support decision makers on how to use cost recovery both as a regulatory tool and to enable performance improvement.
  • Provide advice and guidance for cost recovery reviews to ensure effective and efficient levels of cost recovery. Developing strategic, innovative, and effective advice to problems.
  • Ensure cost recovery practices are aligned to state sector good practice as well as linked to planning, budgeting, and performance systems. Facilitating updates to cost recovery regulatory settings.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships across a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build and deliver priority cost recovery workstreams for MPI.


About You - Mōu

To be successful in the role, you will ideally bring fee and price setting experience and understanding or an interest in developing your policy knowledge. We are looking for a candidate who is proactive, shows initiative, and has experience building and maintaining relationships with a variety of people from different backgrounds.

As a Policy Analyst, you will be capable of providing leadership and guidance across the business on cost recovery issues.

You are someone who:

  • Has an understanding of, and experience operating in, commercial/financial fee and price setting, and/or Government processes.
  • Can apply critical thinking and analytical skills when problem solving.
  • Provides clear, concise, well-reasoned and practical advice.
  • Is able to write clearly and succinctly for a range of audiences.
  • Will bring a ‘can do' attitude and take ownership of their work to deliver the best results.
  • Has strong interpersonal skills and the desire to make a positive contribution to the team.
  • Has worked in the public sector or are passionate about it.

The Cost Recovery directorate ensures that the right people pay the right price for MPI services. For example, the fee you pay for biosecurity clearance when you next cross the border. We ensure that MPI's price and price setting mechanisms are accurate, fair, encourage good behaviours, and are well regarded by industry and across the public service.
