Our regional parks are much loved and treasured by the people of Auckland and visitors alike, receiving up to 8 million visits a year. They represent the iconic landscapes of the Auckland region and are home to many rare and threatened ecosystems and native species. For many of us, they are places that inspire and define us; places where we seek tranquillity and respite in nature, or more active recreation in the bush or on the beach!

We are on the hunt for Park Ranger to join our Southern Sector Parks Team!

He angitūtanga: The opportunity
As a Park Ranger, you will be responsible for enabling safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation and education experiences in regional park settings, while conserving and protecting natural and cultural heritage resources.

The role is based at the multi-award-winning Ambury Regional Park, but you will also work regularly at Mutukaroa/Hamlin’s Hill Regional Park and Puketutu Island- Te Motu a Hiaroa, as well as from time to time, throughout the Southern Sector parks network as required.

As a Ranger, you will be faced with a fantastic opportunity to support the values that make our organisation and parks world class. You will work closely within a tight knit team with a focus on coordinating conservation work across the three parks, while still contributing to the wider regional park operations and visitor needs.

You will work closely with the Ambury team to manage and support volunteers in achieving conservation goals, including assisting in planning, and implementing the work programmes of these dedicated groups of people. You will establish strong relationships with the Parks’ stakeholders and wider community.

You will be playing a vital role in the educational values of the regional parks by supporting both formal and informal education programmes and be a part of the team responsible for park asset maintenance, events, farm outcomes and collaborating closely with external stakeholders. You will also be involved with visitor and iwi liaison along with fostering and supporting volunteers.

This is a permanent full-time position; you will be required to work weekends and public holidays as well as taking on-call responsibilities on a ranger roster system.

He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for a motivated, people orientated person, to join the Southern Sector ranger team, who can add value and contribute to a committed team.

To be successful you will have you will have strong conservation skills, including pest control and threatened species management (NZ Dotterels and rare plants), revegetation programs and protecting natural and cultural heritage. You will have proven success in conservation outcomes and an appreciation for managing recreation in ecologically significant spaces.

You will be an effective communicator and confident in working with a range of public, Iwi, community groups and volunteers.

You will have strong time management skills and be able to plan and prioritise your work while still being flexible to adapt and react to the unexpected. You will be comfortable working unsupervised across a range of projects, both by yourself and as part of the Ambury and wider southern sector ranger team.

You will need to be physically fit and have proven practical skills with a strong background in conservation and asset management being essential.

Parks, conservation and/or land management qualification(s) would be desirable along with other appropriate licences to support public safety and environmental protection.

A current NZ driver's licence is required for this position.
