Mō te tūnga | About the role
With a primary hub in Wellington, and a presence throughout the country, NZ Police ICT delivers new and enhanced solutions directly and through specialist vendor partnerships. We provide expert advice on how technology can be leveraged to support Police’s strategies and turn concepts into reality through collaborative development.

We are currently seeking a Lead Developer to drive the design, build and maintenance of our low-code platform – Appian.

As the Lead Developer - Low Code, you will work closely with product owners and solution architects to ensure our applications built in low code platforms, meet NZ Police standards. This includes the delivery of appropriate design documentation and the consideration of industry best practices.

The Lead Developer – Low Code will also provide mentorship and guidance to other members of the product team and wider ICT community. This will include directing work and providing support and feedback for the low code developers in your team. You will promote software best practices by sharing your knowledge of low code delivery in the SDLC.

You will have strong Agile experience and be at the cutting edge of the low-code platforms we use, ensuring we are utilising the latest features and best practices of the platform and act as an advocate for these platforms.

This role will initially be working exclusively with the Appian platform so experience in this is desirable.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides advice to the relevant Product Managers and Technical Product Owners on the ongoing strategic direction to improve the platforms and the team capabilities and capacity.
  • Works with Architecture, Network and Infrastructure and Cybersecurity teams to ensure the platform is aligned to ICT strategy and standards.
  • Leverages the visual model-driven environment including features, logic, connectors, templates, modules, and configurations for efficient application development.
  • Works with internal business customers to understand problems and design solutions using low-code platforms.
  • Works with other leads and management to build a strong development team, understanding future work and required capability for successful delivery.
  • Stays up to date with new and upcoming features on relevant platforms, with the intent of introducing them to the Police platforms when appropriate.
  • Provides 3rd level technical support for the platform.

He aha taau e kawe mai | What you’ll bring
Whilst we are looking for skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the role, we also place high importance on your state of mind, the alignment of your values with ours, your ability to contribute to and build high performing teams, and the way that you lead yourself and others.

To be successful in this role you will require the following:

  • Proven experience in a similar role and a keen interest in low-code application development.
  • Ability to mentor and coach other members of the practice.
  • Solid understanding and experience with design patterns and software architecture.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the organisation and adapt to changing requirements.
  • Experience leading software development teams, ideally utilising a low-code or no-code platform.
  • Proficiency in Agile methodologies and product development.
  • Ability to think strategically, planning for the long term as well as today.
  • Excellent customer and stakeholder engagement skills – able to break technical concepts down into simple terms for a range of non-technical audiences.
  • Specific platform certification (Appian) is required but not a pre-requisite to apply, as training will be provided, and certification exam can be completed once in the role.
