Are you passionate about water infrastructure and looking to make a significant impact? Join our dynamic Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience team as a Principal Contracts & Construction Specialist.
You will lead the charge with your technical expertise on contracts and construction methods, guiding complex stormwater and flood resilience projects from inception to completion. In addition, you will drive efficiency, innovation, and excellence in project delivery, ensuring our initiatives are de-risked, fit for purpose, and deliver top-notch value.
You will collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, mentor your peers, and spearhead continuous improvement. If you’re passionate about creating resilient communities and want to be at the forefront of industry best practices, we want you on our team!
Day-to-day you can expect to work on:
- Project and Contract Review: Ensure projects and contracts follow industry best practices, are efficient, safe, provide value for money, and reduce risks to the Council, community, and environment.
- Process Efficiency: Maintain efficient, up-to-date, well-documented delivery processes, and ensure staff are properly trained and mentored.
- Contract Roles: Serve as Engineer to Contract, Contract Administrator, or Independent Certifier on complex NZS391(X) construction contracts, and mentor staff in these roles.
- High-Risk Procurements: Lead high-risk procurements, advise on key attributes, and participate in tender evaluation panels.
- Team Contribution: Contribute significantly to the Healthy Waters team, supporting the goal of being a Centre of Excellence and Auckland Council’s top-performing unit.

He kōrero mōu: About you
As an ideal candidate for this role, you will possess a high proficiency in professional civil and/or environmental engineering, with subject matter expertise in contracts, contract management, and risk management. Ideally you will have at least 15 years’ experience in this space.
You should have strong project and programme management skills, excellent communication abilities including presenting and public speaking, and the capability to train and mentor others. Additionally, you will have strong interpersonal skills to engage and motivate the team, and a delivery-focused mindset to ensure key outcomes are achieved.
We will also be looking for the following qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a construction related field.
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent in Project Management
