Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity
Downer NZ holds a long-term Asset Management and Facilities Management contract with the Department of Corrections and the Ministry of Justice. Downer provide enhanced and extended scope of works and implement new processes to ensure that all facilitates are well managed and maintained. We are currently seeking a Plumbing Team Leader to join our team at the Christchurch Justice & Emergency Services Precinct.
A bit about the role
This is a hands-on role and will be carrying out general plumbing and maintenance activities while providing leadership and guidance to the Facilities technical delivery team. As 2IC to the Senior Property Manager (SPM) you will be expected to have control of all aspects of the site whilst the SPM is on leave. This role also forms part of the on-call roster to hold the duty phone after-hours for call escalation.
Some duties include but not limited to.
- Lead and manage Facilities Technicians, Trade Assistants, Apprentices, and subcontractors, ensuring service delivery aligns with Downer Values.
- Actively contribute to projects and services, under the direction of Managers or Coordinators, while maintaining a focus on time, cost, and resource efficiency.
- Foster strong customer relationships and engage in activities that add value to clients, while also assisting with specifications, designs, and costings.
- Ensure compliance with risk management guidelines and promote Zero Harm principles throughout work processes.
- Provide technical solutions, with expertise in plumbing, gas systems, drainage, air-conditioning, mechanical, and facilities assets, ensuring efficient, compliant service delivery.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about going the extra mile! You are motivated and ready for the opportunity to take on maintenance work to achieve a high standard performance. You will also bring with you:
- Current Certified Plumber Registration NZ (PGDB).
- Champion Zero Harm and demonstrate at least five years of post-qualification trade experience, ideally within facilities and building maintenance.
- Proven leadership skills in trade-based environments, with the ability to manage teams effectively.
- Knowledge of electrical service technician training is preferred, along with an understanding of business operations and basic financial concepts.
- Strong communication, prioritization, stress management, and strategic problem-solving skills.
- Motivated, outcome-focused, with a commitment to challenging the status quo and seeking continuous improvement.
