The Western Regional Parks encompass vast forests with magnificent Kauri to the black volcanic sand surf beaches synonymous with Auckland's west coast. The scenic landscape encapsulates everything New Zealand is world-renowned for including the Waitakere Ranges, Muriwai and Te Rau Puriri Regional Parks and are a mix of beaches, farmland, and forest.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Ranger to lead programmes across the Western Regional Parks sector. Key responsibilities include managing park assets, overseeing operational maintenance, budgeting, planning that supports recreational use of the park land and provides quality information to guide the prioritisation of capital works renewals and developments.

As a leader, you'll mentor a high-performing team, fostering professional development while collaborating with other portfolio based senior rangers to achieve regional park outcomes in, recreation, partnerships, and conservation.

This is a permanent full-time position; you will be required to work weekends and public holidays as well as taking on-call responsibilities on a ranger roster system.

The potential roster is Monday – Friday and being rostered on call every 4-week basis over the weekend/public holidays.

The salary ranging for this role is between $85,000 - $94,000 depending on experience and skillset.

Day to day you can expect to:

  • Lead the parks asset management work programme to ensure equipment and infrastructure is regularly checked and maintained
  • Provide leadership for a team park rangers and programme support staff
  • Encourage the use of asset data capture apps and management systems to ensure our asset condition knowledge is confidently understood
  • Build strong relationships with in-house project leaders, contractors, and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure collaboration
  • Plan and deliver work maintenance programmes associated with the extensive network of tracks, equipment, car parks and roads across the Western Regional Parks

He kōrero mōu: About you
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring strong leadership, programme management, park and asset management experience, and excellent relationship-building and communication skills.

This position is based at the Western Regional Parks office at the Arataki Visitor Centre; however, you will be required to work across all the Western sector and support the regional parks network. You will be required to work as part of a rostered standby system which includes weekends and public holidays.

  • Knowledge of park operations and Ranger work is highly desirable and an appropriate tertiary or recognised qualification will also be required.
  • A current New Zealand drivers’ licence is essential as you will be travelling within the Auckland region.
