Join our Transport and Infrastructure business, as a Road Maintenance Foreperson!
This role supports our Queenstown team on maintenance initiatives and urgent repair work across the network. You will be working on a unique and stunning alpine network in the areas of Queenstown and Wanaka, conducting routine and emergency maintenance to ensure the upkeep of infrastructure, providing safety to the public.
As one of the custodians of the Queenstown roading network, you will play an instrumental part in your crews’ success by motivating and supporting the team to provide exceptional maintenance solutions across the network. You will also:
- Be responsible to ensure all work is completed to the satisfaction of our customers and contract standards.
- Ensure that all Zero Harm and production targets are met.
- Provide clear records and reports on all activities undertaken by Downer staff and subcontractors.
- Offer coaching and training to your crew to grow their capabilities.
The day-to-day tasks you and your crew will carry out include:
- Minor traffic management site setup.
- Delivering asphalt treatments for surface faults throughout the Queenstown Lakes road network.
- Responding to customer requests
- Attending to safety or significant faults and providing short- and long-term repairs
- Capture QA records and accurate asset information as required
- After hours emergency response
Based from Frankton in Queenstown, this is a permanent, full-time position, primarily working Monday – Friday however flexibility to pick up occasional weekend work, rostered winter maintenance work, and on-call shifts may be required.

To be successful as a Road Maintenance Foreperson, you will have excellent communication skills and solid customer and commercial awareness on site. You will be confident to plan and structure the workload but also capable to troubleshoot on the fly.
We’d also value the following skills and attributes:
- Leadership experience in the civil industry, preferably road maintenance experience.
- Knowledge and experience of pavement construction, stabilisation repairs, surface preparation and asphalt repair treatments.
- You’ll be an effective communicator to drive your crew, report to supervisors and liaise with the public.
- You’ll have your Full NZ Class 2 Drivers License.
- Experience in plant operation including excavator, loader and trucks would be a benefit.
- Ideally you will have your Level 1 STMS license, but not essential.
- Show good initiative and be confident in decision making and problem solving.
- Solid attitude to get stuck into any task at hand.
- The flexibility to work late nights and weekends is also required.
