Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity

Downer holds a long-term Asset Management and Facilities Management contract with the Department of Corrections and the Ministry of Justice. This involves the proactive management and delivery to the national portfolio of facilities including 15 prisons, 100 courts and 157 community correctional sites. This contract underpins the provision of availability of facilities to support core Government services.

The primary role will be carrying out general carpentry and maintenance activities. You will be expected to be involved in planning, organising, and controlling activities and operations as both part of a crew and individually assigned tasks. All work is completed to the satisfaction of customers and all targets (safety, quality, and productivity) are met.

You will be expected to work ‘hands-on’ and have experience in a variety of building industry-related projects, which would be an advantage. The role also requires a high standard of personal presentation and workmanship together with strong customer service skills.

A bit about the role

We are currently seeking a Handy Person to join our high performing team in building maintenance for the Hawke's Bay Prison. While undertaking general maintenance and repairs of the facilities your duties will also include;

  • Dealing with unexpected events and providing direction to work for teams
  • Looking for opportunities for continuous improvement and providing solutions
  • The undertaking of scheduled maintenance, first response, and reactive activities in order to mitigate disruption to the customer’s activities
  • A hands-on role in completing work safely and meeting our client and the needs of the contract

We're looking for someone who is passionate about going the extra mile! You are motivated and ready for the opportunity to take on maintenance work to achieve a high standard performance. You will also bring with you:

  • Previous experience with property, facilities and/or asset management role
  • Technical skills: working knowledge of the techniques, methods, tools and safety precautions of the carpentry trade. Skills in the use of tools, materials, and equipment used in electrical work.
  • Literate (ability to complete time and job sheets, and some technical literacy to operate handheld electronic recording devices)
  • Able to work unsupervised while providing safe and quality work
  • A full class one Driver’s license and ability to drive a manual
  • Physically fit and agile, able to carry out regular bending and lifting tasks
  • Good verbal and written communication skills as well as tech savvy
