Job Description

Position Overview
This is a Principal Analyst - Statistics position in the Environmental Health Intelligence NZ (EHINZ) team, which provides intelligence on New Zealand’s environmental health. EHINZ is contracted by the Ministry of Health and is based in the Centre for Public Health Research (CPHR) within the College of Health, Massey University (Wellington).

EHINZ operates five environmental health surveillance systems:

  • Environmental health indicators
  • Hazardous substances
  • Environmental burden of disease
  • Social vulnerability indicators
  • The NZ Congenital Anomalies Register


This is a fixed-term contract until June 2026, based on our Wellington Campus. Funding for this position is provided by the Ministry of Health.

Salary band for this position is $79,009 to $111,028 based on skills and experience.

What you will be doing: The work includes the analysis of environmental health-related data and producing insights and intelligence for publication and dissemination to our stakeholders and clients, including:

Providing technical assistance

  • Assisting the EHINZ team in the surveillance of the impact of the environment on the health of New Zealanders.
  • Developing new forms of analysis of environmental health-related data
  • Using the Integrated Database Infrastructure
  • Assisting with the development of new environmental health indicators
  • Assisting with other EHINZ-related projects as required.
  • Assist in the maintenance and updating of the EHINZ Guidelines & Analytical Standards


Reporting
Producing data, analysis, and intelligence on environmental health issues for ad-hoc requests from stakeholders and clients.
Producing ad-hoc reports on special environmental health topics.

Engaging with stakeholders
Giving presentations on the work of EHINZ.
Representing EHINZ at technical advisory meetings as required.
Maintaining relationships with stakeholders and clients.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A postgraduate degree in statistics, information or data science (essential)
  • Knowledge and experience in health, health science, science, and/or epidemiology (essential)
  • High proficiency in using SAS and Microsoft Excel (essential)Experience in working with a range of data, and using a variety of statistical tools and/or analytical techniques (essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct statistical analyses to produce insights and intelligence (essential)
  • The skills to proactively apply analytical thinking skills and insight to the analysis of our data; in particular, identifying significant patterns and changes over time, and investigating these by further analysing the data (essential)
  • The ability to interpret and explain the results of analyses and research (essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively in a team and independently (essential)
  • Experience using the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) and/or health datasets (desirable)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (desirable)
