Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Based in the School of Computer Science, this role provides specialist research and teaching support while contributing to the ongoing operation and compliance of the School’s laboratories and facilities.

This position primarily supports the School of Computer Science which is New Zealand’s leading computer science department with over 40 academic staff including 8 full professors. It performs research in a wide range of computing fields including data science; software engineering; cyber security; theory; communication and information technology; and systems development and evaluation. It teaches into undergraduate programmes in Science and Engineering as well as supporting a vibrant postgraduate programme which attracts quality Masters and PhD candidates. Currently the School boasts over 600 undergraduate students and 115 postgraduate students.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position.

Remuneration is between $58,300 - $67,550 per annum, dependent on skills and experience.

He kōrero mōu | About you

Our ideal candidate likes to help and is a technology enthusiast. This has driven you to try, learn and finally do some of the following with confidence. Build or repaired a computer and optimised its performance. Configure and used a virtual reality headset. Design and print an object on a 3D printer. Setup and maintain professional audio-visual equipment. Use a camera with changeable lenses. Flew a drone/remotely operated vehicle or even build your own. Build something cool out of a Raspberry PI, Arduino or an ESP32. You have some experience with measuring equipment such as sensors and their data loggers. You are familiar with different devices that run operating systems such as Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS and Android. If needed, you can use a command prompt and know scripting.

To be considered for this position, our ideal candidate will bring:

  • Minimum Qualification:
  • Tertiary Diploma or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar


3 years’ experience as a technician or in an IT role that involves supporting any of the following hardware/technologies:

  • Custom build computers
  • Virtual/Augmented Reality
  • Human machine interfaces
  • Physiological and exercise equipment
  • Cameras and other sensors
  • 3D Scanners and 3D Printers
  • Network and communications
  • GPU, FPGA, ASIC, etc. accelerators
  • Embedded systems and PLC’s
  • Audio visual equipment
  • Remotely Piloted Vehicles or Drones
  • Robotics


Skills:

  • Understand hardware and software capabilities from specifications and documentation.
  • Design and execute test plans, fault analysis, troubleshooting, and basic repairs.
  • Can setup, configure and calibrate equipment or software.
  • Able to perform on-line system administration tasks
  • Can work with different operating systems, command line and scripting.
  • Confident to instruct others on how to use equipment and software.
