Tēnei tūranga - About this role

The primary role of the Youth Justice Manager is to provide leadership and management of a Youth Justice multi-disciplinary team. Your team will be made up of Social Workers, Supervisors, Team Leader, Youth Justice Coordinators, and Administration staff across a large geographic area.

With your strong, demonstrated history of leadership, we will look to you to champion Youth Justice across the Hawkes Bay region. You'll be pivotal in developing and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships and partnerships including iwi and Māori Social Service providers to ensure our success. You will work closely with Tamariki and Whānau Services and the wider Youth Justice Services and Residential Care group to ensure we have a unified approach to achieving great outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi in the youth justice pipeline.

To succeed in this role, you must have a demonstrated track record of consistently high performance and delivery in complex, high-risk and dynamic operational environments. You'll have significant experience in stepping into a team dynamic environment and operating challenges, identifying key opportunities to drive improved performance and creating a team that can withstand scrutiny from external monitors and key stakeholders.

The Youth Justice Manager position will enable the frontline by supporting the delivery of Social Work Services and partnered service delivery by providing youth justice services to better support tamariki and rangatahi and assessing the needs of those in our care by giving the right tools, access, and support to our kaimahi.

You are a role model in your leadership style and able to work in an agile way - you hold your direct reports to account, set clear and consistent expectations of what 'good' looks like. You work in a way that encourages your team to consistently lift standards and our expectations of service delivery within our Youth Justice residences. You are calm under pressure and can lead influentially and navigate your team effectively through a crisis.

  • Cross-sectional expertise and knowledge of the drivers and causes of Youth Justice and young people in care, including a deep understanding of the law and legal system in the context of responding to tamariki and rangatahi in residences and community homes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and build a strong and supportive culture of accountability, performance, and integrity that role models the behaviours and values of both Youth Justice Services and Residential Care and Oranga Tamariki.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing strategic ways of working, embedding good practice and building a strong focus on service while leading large, complex reforms in dynamic, operational and 24/7 service delivery environments.
