We have a fantastic opportunity for someone to come and work in our beautiful part of the country as a Pouwhakataki - Iwi Liaison Coordinator. You will become a member of an expanding and innovative MPES team who live the values of Manaakitanga, Kaitiakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Whakamana and Tikanga.



Based in Nelson Bays, you will play a vital role in maintaining external relationships with Iwi, Government Agencies, and Social Service providers. You will work with Iwi and Māori whānau from across the Nelson Bays area to support not just police strategies, but those of Iwi/Māori through reducing Māori re-offending, building trust and confidence, and recruiting. The role is wide and varied, engaging with Māori support networks within the Justice Sector, non-government organisations and internal support for Police staff.


As Pouwhakataki – Iwi Liaison Coordinator, you will empower Māori vision and aspiration and enable the Police contribution to Māori wellbeing through the development and enhancement of authentic relationships that inspires a transformation in the delivery of service to Māori through Te Huringa te Tai.



In this role you will be privileged to build and sustain partnerships with NGOs, Maori health providers, and iwi to help develop and promote initiatives that will reduce the number of Maori entering the criminal justice pipeline, or who are otherwise at risk, or who are victims or potential victims in the district. Through a solutions-based approach you will have opportunities to mentor, lead and support Police and other resources committed to our organisation being more responsive to Maori.



As this role carries a portfolio for Supported Resolutions across the District the successful candidate will have experience in achieving supportive resolutions, implementing initiatives, engaging different partners and stakeholders within the community and wider district, and influencing the mind-set of those they work with in order to better provide resolutions/pathways that support iwi and community needs.



There is also a need to be dynamic, adjusting your mahi to suit the changing demands and needs of the community, including diversifying to support the work of the team across the district and including, at times, working with our ethnic and Pasifika communities.




Key Accountabilities:


  • Deliver Our Business for Maori, Pacific and ethnic communities by driving innovative change and looking within the community and iwi to build partnerships that promote safer homes, safer roads, and safer communities.
  • Assist the Nelson Bays area in developing and promoting initiatives that reduce the number of Maori who are offending or at risk of being victims within Nelson Bays, Tasman District
  • Leading the activities for delivery of Mäori responsiveness and support to area (West Coast and Marlborough) based Iwi Liaison Officers
  • Enable and empower the cultural confidence of our staff (at all levels) in Te Ao Maori.
  • Live the values of Whakamana and Kaitiakitanga and confidently lead the kaupapa to create positive outcomes for Maori.
  • Support Supported Resolutions activities across the district along with monitoring and reviewing activities.

Utu ā-tau | Salary



This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $95,057 and $100,626 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
