Our Youth Justice Residence 'Te Maioha o Parekarangi' provides a safe, secure and supportive environment where rangatahi (young people) who have offended can make changes and get their lives back on track. In addition to maintaining secure facilities, we aim to help rehabilitate young offenders. Residential Youth Workers understand that the causes of offending are complex, and that successfully dealing with young offenders, demands action beyond simple punitive measures.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

  • Residential Youth Workers provide rangatahi with the confidence and skills to become positive contributors to their whānau and communities.
  • Transport rangatahi to off-site court appearances in a safe and timely manner, undertake pre-arranged escorting duties outside of normal hours
  • Ensuring that a safe and secure environment is maintained for the benefit of the rangatahi, staff and the community
  • Supporting young offenders in their personal growth and rehabilitation with a focus on health, education, training and employment
  • Working with rangatahi to help them build and strengthen relationships with their whānau and communities and encouraging them to act on referrals to services
  • We are looking for enthusiastic people that want to be part of a team that is instrumental in turning young lives around. As a member of the youth justice residence team, you are working all day with rangatahi. You must have a passion for wanting to make a positive difference in their lives.


Hours of work for RYW - Escorts are 40 hours across Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5.00pm.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring

  • Great engagement skills to overcome barriers
  • Experience with conflict resolution
  • Cultural awareness particularly around Māori and Pacifica communities
  • Ability to establish relationships with people from all walks of life
  • Good computer skills, particularly with MS Office Software, report writing is part of this role
  • A current, and full driver's license and ability to work some weekend hours
  • Experience in social services or working with at-risk youth is ideal, however applicants with transferrable life skills are encouraged to apply
  • Ability to be flexible with working hours
