Work alongside tāngata whaiora to help improve their mental health and wellbeing and make positive lifestyle changes.

About the role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi
Te Tumu Waiora - te reo for ‘to head towards wellness’ - is a model of primary mental health and addictions care and support which aims to provide all New Zealanders experiencing mental distress or addiction challenges with access to convenient, high quality, integrated and person-centred care and support. The model is being rolled out nationally and is free to enrolled patients at participating Primary Health care practices.

The model puts mental health and wellbeing at the heart of general practice with focused roles, Health Improvement Practitioners and Health Coaches working as part of the general practice team. They also have access to a Support Worker who links the team and their patients to services throughout the community.

As a Health Coach you’ll be working as part of the Te Tumu Waiora collective in the primary health care and working across two primary health care practices in Lincoln and Waimairi. Based in the GP practice you’ll be supporting tangata whaiora who have experience of mild to moderate mental health distress and/or are having experience of mental health challenges relating to physical health issues.

Both primary health care practices have benefited from a health coach who has strong cultural understanding of the Chinese community and an ability to speak Mandarin.

Ideally you will have had some practical experience working in a mental health context and willing to learn how this translates into primary care along with physical wellbeing from a Te Whare Tapa Wha perspective.

The ideal candidate will be able to work in a complex health system with multiple stakeholders, forming professional working relationships easily.

This is a fixed role covering parental leave up to a year and ends 12 February 2026. You’ll be working 0.8 FTE, 32 hours per week working Monday to Thursday 8:30 -5pm, based in Christchurch.
