The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga Mahi

The University of Auckland is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead and oversee the delivery of accurate, compliant, and timely payroll services for one of New Zealand's largest employers. You will manage a high-performing team of six and ensure payroll operations align with legislative requirements, employment agreements, and University policies.

In this pivotal role, you’ll be part of the HR Services Leadership Team, working collaboratively across the University to develop streamlined, user-centric processes and drive continuous improvement in payroll systems and practices.

As the Payroll Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing the payroll team, ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery with a strong focus on accuracy and customer satisfaction.
  • Overseeing payroll operations to ensure compliance with New Zealand employment legislation, including the Holidays Act, Employment Relations Act, and other relevant regulations.
  • Managing external payroll audits, ensuring alignment with audit recommendations and maintaining robust internal controls.
  • Building strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, including HR Advisory teams, Finance Managers, and faculty staff, as well as external partners such as IRD and auditors.
  • Driving process improvements and collaborating on system enhancements to support operational efficiency and innovation.
  • Championing equity and the University’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, creating an inclusive and safe environment for all staff.


Position Description

Qualifications
About You | Ko Wai Koe

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Essential: A relevant bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 10 years of payroll experience, including 2+ years in a leadership role. Experience with mid- to large-scale payroll systems, preferably aPay or similar.
  • Knowledge: Extensive understanding of New Zealand employment and payroll legislation.
  • Skills: Proven leadership capabilities, excellent problem-solving skills, and a customer-focused approach to service delivery.


Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience implementing payroll system enhancements and process improvements.
  • Knowledge of payroll compliance within the higher education sector.
